The Lineup of Wines:
Old World vs New World.
Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot/Petit Verdot Blend, Malbec and Grenache/Mourvedre Blend.
1a. Clement et Florian Berthier Sancerre Vieilles Vignes Sur Silex 2013 – Sancerre, Loire Valley, France – 100% Sauvignon Blanc – Pale yellow-gold. Pure, steely, soil-inflected aromas of lime, smoky minerals, crushed stone and quinine. Impressively focused and palate-staining, with very good cut and impressive depth to the pure lemongrass, lime and mineral flavors. Displays excellent density and complexity for such a lithe wine. Finishes with strong floral lift and clinging minerality.
1b. Seifried Estate Sauvignon Blanc Old Coach Road 2013 – Nelson, South Island, New Zealand – 100% Sauvignon Blanc – This has a lovely nose of fresh green apple slices and lemon zest with touches of peach skins and mown grass. Medium-bodied with a good amount of zesty flavor on offer and good balance, it finishes long and zippy.
2a. Domaine Servin Chablis Cuvée Massale Vieilles Vignes 2012 – Chablis, Burgundy, France – 100% Chardonnay – Vinified roughly half in tank, half in older this has the mysterious and mouthwatering appeal of lobster shell reduction, a Riesling-like effusion of apple and white peach as well as musky, peony-like floral perfume and subtly toasty nut oils. All of these convene on a seductively silken palate, leading to a finish of irresistible succulence and saliva inducement, subtly layering floral, fruit and mineral nuances in a manner most premier cru bottlings do not approach.
2b. Charles Krug Winery Chardonnay 2012 – Carneros, California, United States – 100% Chardonnay – 80% barrel-fermented, this reveals hazelnut, honeysuckle and popcorn characteristics in a richer style. It also cuts a deeper, broader swath across the palate. There’s good purity, freshness and a fair amount of oak in the background—it’s a good value for those who prefer this style.
3a. Domaine des Moirots Bourgogne Rouge 2012 – Burgundy, France – 100% Pinot Noir –Aromas of cranberry, spice, brick oven. Snappy red fruit, fresh acid and some mushroom and earth undertones. With unexpected complexity, this is a lot of wine for under $20.
3b. Folk Machine Pinot Noir 2012 – Central Coast, California, United States – 100% Pinot Noir – Deep red. Bright aromas of redcurrant and dried cherry, with spice and herb accents adding complexity. Offers an array of juicy red fruit flavors, with a bitter orange note on the back end. Finishes nervy and energetic, leaving allspice and red berry notes notes behind. This fruit was sourced from vineyards in and close to Monterey.
4a. Château Pont de Brion 2010 – Graves, Bordeaux, France – 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot – Aromas of licorice, underbrush, black currants, cedar and graphite flow from the glass of this great value from Graves. Fine tannins and a medium body make this an old world, old school Bordeaux that doesn’t break the bank.
4b. Linden Vineyards Claret 2011 – Fauquier County, Virginia, United States – 46% Merlot, 31% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Petit Verdot, 8% Cabernet Franc – Firm only just shaded crimson. Mellow, well integrated nose. Not enormous concentration but great elegance. Quite evolved for a 2011 - tannins well integrated. A pretty rather than an intense wine but one that tastes as though a great deal of effort has gone into getting the balance right. Lovely integration.
5a. Domaine La Bérangeraie Cahors Cuvée Maurin 2011 – Cahors, Souduest, France – 100% Malbec – The 2011 Cahors Cuvée Maurin – 100% Malbec vinified in tank – represents a labor-intensive viticultural effort with gentle winemaking taking center stage. Neither fancy techniques nor barrels have proven necessary to making a complete, complex, and convincing statement. Ripe cassis and elderberry fill the nose and mouth, and juicy and expansive palate impression is supported by fine-grained tannins, and the finish delivers the real goods: deep bitterness-tinged black fruits, humus, black pepper, and iodine. The juxtaposition of generous, refreshing juiciness and a dark-hued set of flavors is fascinating. Enjoy this now with grilled meats and let it step into other culinary roles with another 2-3 years in the bottle.
5b. Bodega Noemia de Patagonia A Lisa 2013 – Río Negro, Patagonia, Argentina – 100% Malbec – Bright medium ruby. Inviting aromas of blackberry, currant, plum, coffee and mocha, with a slightly liqueur-like quality. The palate offers excellent cut and precision, with a hint of wildness to the dark berry flavors. Real Patagonia acidity here to carry the fruit. Finishes with dusty, fine-grained tannins and excellent lift.
6a. Two Shepherds Syrah | Mourvèdre 2011 – Sonoma County, California, United States – 50% Syrah, 50% Mourvèdre – Unfined, unfiltered, and racked only once, the wine is slightly cloudy, dark red color. The nose is full of black cherry, tea and blackberry. In the mouth, dark red and black fruits are abundant and vibrant, with noticeable saline and mineral characteristics, that linger pleasantly on the finish.
6b. Domaine Les Aphillanthes Côtes du Rhône Villages Cuvée 3 Cépages 2011 – Southern Rhône, France – 33% Syrah, 33% Mourvèdre, Grenache – From a biodynamically farmed vineyard, this is bottled unfiltered with no exposure to oak whatsoever. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by abundant aromas of blueberry, black raspberry and cherry fruit intermixed with a notion of lavender. Medium to full-bodied with loads of fruit as well as soft tannins, it possesses the charm and fruit-forwardness that makes the finest 2011s appealing.
