Since 1987, Peter Weygandt of Weygandt-Metzler Importing has been an importer of top artisanal European wines. He has gained an international reputation for the quality and diversity of his selections. Weygandt Wines in Washington, DC, is the next natural step for Weygandt-Metzler: a retail store dedicated to showcasing Peter’s portfolio, from the most well-known viticultural regions and winemakers to lesser-known appellations as well as up-and-coming producers. It is a place where consumers can come to learn about the portfolio, and occasionally meet the importer and our winemakers.

WINES -

1. Marc Plouzeau Touraine Perles Sauvages Sparkling Brut Rosé  – Loire Valley, France

This is a lovely bottle of sparkling Rosé from Marc Plouzeau, showing that Cabernet Franc can also be a fine base for bubbly as well. The wine seems like a Brut to my palate, though there is no mention of this on the label. The color is a pale salmon and the bouquet is really bright and stylish, offering up scents of melon, white cherries, bread dough, a fine base of soil and a topnote of orange peel. On the palate the wine is medium-full frothy and nicely soil-driven, with good cut and bounce, fine focus and lovely length and grip on the finish. This is really an enjoyable bottle of bubbly and an excellent value! - John Gilman, A View from the Cellar

2. Andre Scherer Pinot Noir – Alsace, France

Pinot Noir, originally from Burgundy, is the only red grape variety authorized in Alsace. Principally used in the production of light and fruity wines, Pinot Noir is vinified more and more commonly as a red grape, thus reviving an ancient tradition in Alsace. This wine has a nose of red ripe fruit with herbs like sage and thyme. Palate very subtle with pomegranate and substantial tannins. Fruit forward and quite ample for a pinot.

3. Les Granges Paquenesses Côtes du Jura Le Plou –  Jura, France – Poulsard

Jura is a region not many people may be familiar with. Located between Burgundy and Switzerland, this cool climate wine region produces wines with some similarity to Burgundy and Swiss wine. Jura wines are distinctive and unusual wines. This wine has a light strawberry color with gold highlights. Nose has a hint of ripe strawberries. Light mid palate, with melon, strawberry, and slight bitterness on the finish.

4. Denis & Didier Berthollier Les Granges Tissot – Savoie, France – Mondeuse

Mondeuse has been grown for centuries in the Alpine foothills of the Savoie region. Like many grapes that only flourish in isolated pockets, it survives because it gives a truly stellar wine in its chosen terroir. Showing both dark and red fruit, black plum, raspberry, cranberry, and pomegranate set against a pleasing astringency with a dash of black pepper to encompass red-meat pairings, it shows great focus and beautiful harmony.

5. Uwe Schiefer Blaufränkisch Purbach – Südburgenland, Austria – Blaufränkisch

Blaufränkisch is a little-known red grape variety that typically produces wines with juicy red fruit and a spicy character. This wine is a fantastic medium-bodied cuvée bursting with harmonious flavors of dark fruit and earth, with a pleasant mouthfeel and a long finish.

6. Mas Marer Montsant – Montsant, Spain - Grenache, Syrah, Merlot

Montsant is a lesser known wine making region in Spain. A wild, pungent bouquet evokes dried cherry, tobacco and rose, with smoked meat and musky earth notes adding complexity. Sweet and seamless on the palate, offering cherry and game flavors lifted by tangy acidity. Finishes with good energy and length, leaving smoke and cherry notes behind. Distinctly old-school in character and drinking well now. This wine was featured in NY Times “Best Wines Under $15”
