Mosaic is excited to have the opportunity to partner and collaborate with the Japanese American Museum of Oregon. Dr. Jennifer Fang of the Japanese American Museum of Oregon will present on the current resurgence of anti-Asian racism in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and the strong momentum of the Movement for Black Lives, offers a ripe opportunity to better understand the ways that race and racial hierarchies are constructed. From chattel slavery and “coolieism” to Black and Vietnamese American solidarity in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, this presentation will examine a few historical moments when the racialized experiences of Asian Americans and African Americans intersected and deeply informed each other.

Dr. Jennifer Fang

Dr. Jennifer Fang is the Director of Education at the Japanese American Museum of Oregon and an adjunct professor at the University of Portland where she teaches Modern U.S. History and Asian American History. She earned a Ph.D. in U.S. History and specializes in race and immigration during the Cold War. Jennifer’s research and writing have been published in peer-reviewed academic journals and developed into museum exhibitions.
