Since 1987, Peter Weygandt of Weygandt-Metzler Importing has been an importer of top artisanal European wines. He has gained an international reputation for the quality and diversity of his selections. Weygandt Wines in Washington, DC, is the next natural step for Weygandt-Metzler: a retail store dedicated to showcasing Peter’s portfolio, from the most well-known viticultural regions and winemakers to lesser-known appellations as well as up-and-coming producers. It is a place where consumers can come to learn about the portfolio, and occasionally meet the importer and our winemakers.

The Lineup of Wines:

Domaine des Aubuisières Vouvray Brut Methode Traditionnelle NV – Vouvray, Loire Valley, France – 100% Chenin Blanc – 13% abv – Organic – Chenin blanc is most impressive for how it can deliver such a wide range of outstanding wines, from bone-dry sparkler all the way up to luscious, honeyed dessert wines, and sparkling Vouvrays that are more than worthy substitutes for Champagne. The bouquet is deep and exquisitely delicate, as it offers up a mélange of honeycomb, tart apples, grapefruit, chalk and stony minerality. On the palate the wine is medium-full, crisp and bone-dry, with very fine, ethereal mousse, beautiful focus and balance and a long, complex and bouncy finish.

Birgit Eichinger Grüner Veltliner Hasel 2011 – Kamptal, Niederösterreich, Austria – 100% Grüner Veltliner – 12.5% abv – Sustainable – Pale yellow. Highly aromatic bouquet evokes pit fruits, orange zest and honeysuckle, with a spicy overtone. Vibrant nectarine and citrus flavors show very good focus and energy, picking up spiciness with air. Finishes with excellent intensity and focus and good spicy persistence. This wine would go well with all sorts of lighter foods, especially vegetables.

Domaine des Moirots Givry Blanc 2010 – Côte Chalonnaise, Burgundy, France - 100% Chardonnay – 12.5% abv – SustainablePart fermented in barrel, the majority in foudres. Fine citrus and herbal nose. Slightly smoky. Lovely freshness and concentration. Intense, fresh and pure. Lots of citrus energy. So fresh.

Domaine Collotte Marsannay Rosé 2012 – Marsannay, Burgundy, France – 100% Pinot Noir – 13% abv – Sustainable – Light, bright pink. Strawberry and nectarine on the nose, along with spice and floral nuances and a touch of anise. Juicy and nicely concentrated, offering pliant red berry flavors and slow-mounting spiciness. Finishes with good length and a kick of candied rose.

Juan Manuel Burgos Avan Ribera del Duero Nacimiento 2011 – Ribera del Duero, Castilla y León, Spain – 100% Tempranillo – 14% abv – Sustainable – Dark purple. Deep, brooding aromas of blackcurrant, cured tobacco and licorice are enlivened by a spicy nuance. Chewy, concentrated dark berry flavors show impressive energy and become spicier with air. Finishes on a note of cherry compote, with gentle spicy lift and sweet persistence.

Clos Bellane Côtes du Rhône Villages Les Échalas 2010 – Southern Rhône, France – 55% Grenache, 45% Syrah – 14.5% abv – Sustainable – Dark reddish purple. Black cherry and blackberry with hints of earth and coffee on the nose. Rich, well-balanced and complex with delicate tannins and a silky-smooth, long-lasting finish. A very classy Cote du Rhone Villages!
