Deborah Solomon’s career in journalism began at the Cornell Daily Sun. Among and in between tenures as art critic for the Wall Street Journal and author of the quintessential Sunday New York Times "Questions For" column, Solomon has meticulously researched the life of Norman Rockwell. American Mirror (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, November 2013) portrays the intensely complex private person behind a mythic public artist who created “a history of the American people that never was.”
Andy Grundberg, Associate Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Studies at the Corcoran College of Art and Design, is a critic, curator, teacher, and arts consultant who has been involved with photography and art since the 1970s. As a critic for the New York Times from 1981 to 1991 and author of numerous publications, Grundberg has often written on the intersections of art, photography, media, and narrative.
Never shy of voicing passionate opinions and completely devoid of the meh factor, Ms. Solomon and Mr. Grundberg will offer a spirited give-and-take on Rockwell's oscillating reputation in the art world and the lingering influence of a jacket-and-pipe-clad illustrator on the American narrative.
