Join newly arrived Cornell in Washington students, Cornell alumni and family, and friends for a one-hour long kayak or canoe paddle on the Potomac River, followed by early lunch on the beautiful Georgetown waterfront. Come alone or with a friend; it is not necessary to come with a boat-mate. For our first hour, we’ll paddle upstream from Thompson Boat Center (TBC) in Georgetown to the northwest and then reverse course back to TBC. For the second hour, we will lunch at the adjacent Potomac waterfront. We will hang out at the harbor or sit on the grass at Georgetown Waterfront Park. You can bring your own picnic food or buy food from shops at the Washington Harbour.

For the time on the water, bring your own sunscreen, hat, etc. Swimmers only.

For lunch afterwards, also bring picnic food/fluids or money to purchase food/fluids at shops at Washington Harbour. Also bring a blanket to sit on and frisbee for lunchtime picnicking, playing, and lounging at the park.

Please note the time and location. We start promptly at 9:05 a.m. renting boats at Thompson Boat Center. Please arrive on time (or before) to ensure availability of boats. The Cornell students and event organizer (Clint Brass) will be on the water no longer than one hour, but alumni and friends may separate from the group to stay on the water for a longer time if you wish.

***SOLD OUT - WAITLIST ACTIVE BELOW***

Attention all eco-minded CCW Members! Here's a special opportunity for a boat tour on the Anacostia River. Come hear how the Anacostia Watershed Society has been cleaning up and restoring what was once known as one of the most polluted rivers in the U.S. Over about two hours, the tour will travel eight miles of the river, from bustling urban waterfront to serene natural areas. Most of the main stem of the Anacostia River runs through Washington DC, and about 80 percent of the tributaries that feed it run through Prince George’s and Montgomery counties in Maryland. The tidal Anacostia carries all of this water into the Potomac River, and eventually into the Chesapeake Bay. The Anacostia is rebounding from decades of abuse and neglect and  supports over 180 species of birds, nearly 50 species of fish, and 8 species of freshwater mussels. Some of the animals you can see in and along the river include: bald eagles, beavers, white perch, ospreys, striped bass, cormorants, herons, turtles, egrets, herring, red fox, shad, and kingfishers.

The skiff accommodates 18 passengers. Registration is free. Limited to CCW Members and guests who are CCW Members.

Departing from the dock at Diamond Teague Park, across from Nationals Stadium.

Alexander Hamilton is well remembered as one of America’s Founding Fathers.  But he was also a soldier, who fought through most of the Revolutionary War, from New York City in the beginning, to Yorktown at the end.  He worked closely — though not always politely! — with George Washington, and led the crucial attack that unpinned the British defenses at Yorktown.  His soldier’s experience underpinned much of his life after the war even including his final, fatal duel with Aaron Burr.  This presentation, by David Silbey, Professor of History at Cornell University and Associate Director of Cornell in Washington (and leader of CCW's Civil War battlefield bus tours), will look at Hamilton as a soldier, both when he was in the army and when he was not, talk about his experiences, and how the soldier’s life shaped him.

The Cornell Club of Washington is pleased to host the Ivy Singles Happy Hour Fall Kick-Off!

We invite you to join us at this charming historic landmark, the James Monroe House, just off Pennsylvania Avenue.

When Timothy Caldwell, a wealthy businessman from Philadelphia, decided in 1806 to build “the handsomest house in the Capital City,” little did he dream that it would one day serve as home for President James Monroe, ambassadors foreign and domestic, the nation’s first weatherman, and the city’s oldest club devoted to the arts.

Inspired by London’s Chelsea Arts Club and the National Arts Club in Manhattan, Washington artists created their own club in May 1916 and purchased the Monroe House as its home. With a focus on painting, sculpture, music, and drama, the Arts Club provided a contrast to Washington’s more traditional clubs. It was also the first club in the city to admit women as charter members.

Explore two floors of spacious rooms where monthly exhibits of paintings and photography line the walls

Relax with old friends and meet new ones.   A good selection of appetizers will be served, and happy hour drink prices will be available for the duration of our party at the cash bar.

    ***Carpool drivers needed***

Still time to sign up, but what we especially need are carpool drivers.  If you can help, contact Clint Brass ctb14@cornell.edu

Alumni and Cornell in Washington students will climb Old Rag Mountain, near Sperryville, VA, for the 66th time in our semiannual trek into the Blue Ridge.  This is one of the Washington area's most popular excursions, and we expect a large turnout (25-40 people) each time we go.

The first 1/3 of the strenuous, 9-mile hike (summit 3268 ft.; elevation gain 2300 ft.) is on an uphill trail through the trees, while the upper part is open and rocky. Bring lunch and water (two liters per person *minimum*) in a day-pack, and be sure to wear a hat, sunscreen, and sturdy shoes. The total time needed for climbing, enjoying the view, eating, and descending is about 6 hours. We usually get back to D.C. around 7:00 pm. The National Park Service does not allow more hikers after the parking lot is full. Therefore, a prompt 7:45am start from the Cornell Center is needed for this full-day event.

Note: This is a very difficult hike. Those who have not hiked a trail like Old Rag's are strongly encouraged to e-mail or call Clint Brass, using the contact information below, if you would like to get more information before RSVPing.

    Dress: Sports/Outdoor

Transportation/Directions: We rendezvous as a group in Sperryville, arriving before 9:45am, and then drive together as a group to the mountain parking lot.

For carpoolers (unless other arrangements are made), come to the Cornell Wolpe Center to meet your driver: 2148 O Street, NW Washington, DC.  (Metro Dupont Circle (Red))  We will leave promptly at 7:45am.

For those driving a carpool from DC, arrive before 7:45am at: Cornell Wolpe Center 2148 O Street, NW Washington, DC. Most carpoolers will rendezvous there, unless other arrangements have been made.

For those driving directly to our Sperryville rendezvous point, make sure you get a PDF with directions from the organizer. Do not rely on phones: you will lose cell reception on the way, and roads are not always well marked.

Cars will be dispatched starting at 7:45am from the Cornell Wolpe Center or may drive directly to our rendezvous point in Sperryville, arriving absolutely no later than 9:45am (Sperryville Trading Cafe and Market, formerly the Emporium). At 9:45am, we drive in caravan, as a group, to the mountain parking lot. The rendezvous in Sperryville is necessary, if we wish to do the hike as a group.

When RSVPing, please indicate if you can give anyone a ride (if so, how many people), if you need a ride, or if you will meet us there. Directions will be available that morning at the Cornell Center or via e-mail in a PDF file.

Cost: Please plan ahead for paying fees; some cash may be necessary. Pricing has changed since past hikes to a flat $30/vehicle National Park Service (NPS) fee. Bring your portion of the $30 NPS fee, payable on location before we begin. Please bring cash in small bills. In case the NPS parking lot fills, it will be necessary to park on neighboring private property, where in the past they have charged an additional $10 fee (cash only). Carpoolers should plan to pay in cash a portion of the vehicle fee and contribution toward gas money (variable amount up to around $10).

To attend: RSVP by Wednesday, September 12th, to Clint Brass '90, Please provide your name, email address, a telephone number where you can be reached shortly before the hike (in the event of bad weather), and the number of people coming. Friends and family are welcome. In addition, we try to carpool; please indicate if you can give anyone a ride (if so, how many people), if you need a ride, or if you will meet us there. In the event of a weather postponement on Saturday, September 15, the Club will do the hike on our alternative rain date, Saturday, September 29, 2018. To comply with University policy, participants will be asked to sign a standard release form.

Due to popular demand, the Cornell and Columbia Clubs of Washington present an all-day guided bus trip to the Antietam National Battlefield for a second time. Our guide will again be Cornell Professor David Silbey, a Cornell alumnus and military historian who has published widely on modern warfare and has long experience walking the Antietam battlefield.

    425px-Maryland_Campaign.png

"On December 1, 1862, Abraham Lincoln wrote an annual message to Congress, a state of the disunion, if you will. He finished with these words:

'The fiery trial through which we pass, will light us down, in honor or dishonor, to the latest generation. We say we are for the Union. The world will not forget that we say this. We know how to save the Union. The world knows we do know how to save it. We -- even we here -- hold the power, and bear the responsibility. In giving freedom to the slave, we assure freedom to the free -- honorable alike in what we give, and what we preserve. We shall nobly save, or meanly lose, the last best hope of earth. Other means may succeed; this could not fail. The way is plain, peaceful, generous, just -- a way which, if followed, the world will forever applaud, and God must forever bless.'

It is hard to imagine that when Lincoln wrote of the 'fiery trial' he did not think of the Battle of Antietam. Antietam remains the bloodiest single day in American history, worse than Gettysburg or Pearl Harbor, D-Day or 9/11. But it was also the start of a turn in the war. From Antietam in 1862 to Gettysburg in 1863, the war was won and lost. Antietam, as Churchill said about another war, was not the beginning of the end, but the end of the beginning.

We will go to Sharpsburg, MD to understand why and how the battle was so important, so bloody, and so near-run. It was Robert E. Lee's greatest battle; it was his worst. It was George McClellan's biggest failure and also his redemption. Most importantly, it was the battle for which Abraham Lincoln had been waiting, impatiently. To find out why, we have to and will walk the battlefield and see the battle as the soldiers and generals saw it.”

    Itinerary:

    1. Bus to South Mountain Battlefield State Park
    2. McClellan’s Headquarters, Boonsboro Pike
    3. The Cornfield and Bloody Lane, north of town.
    4. Burnside Bridge, south of town.
    5. Antietam National Cemetery, middle of town.

SilbeyHeadShot_0_1_.pngProfessor David Silbey is the associate director of the Cornell in Washington program and a senior lecturer at Cornell. He teaches courses on European history, modern military history, guerilla conflicts, and the role of popular will in waging war. Silbey received his BA from Cornell and his PhD from Duke University.

His first book, The British Working Class and Enthusiasm for War, 1914-1916 was published by Taylor & Francis in 2005. His second book, A War of Empire and Frontier: The Philippine-American War, 1899-1902 was published by Hill & Wang in Spring 2007. Volunteers will engage in light manual labor, mostly consisting of digging holes, adding mulch to trees, and placing trees.  On-site instructions and supervision will be provided. This is a good event for families with children.

This event will accommodate up to 15 volunteers. Interested persons should register here on the CCW website at least one week prior to the event. Once your register, admins will send you a link to Casey Trees' proprietary registration setup and waiver.

Special Instructions: Volunteers should wear comfortable clothes, closed-toe shoes, and are encouraged but not required to bring their own gardening gloves.
    Directions: Dakota Crossing
    Metro:
This event is NOT easily accessible by Metro and will require a pickup. Rhode Island Ave (Red Line) is the nearest stop.
Casey Trees is a one of DC's fastest-growing environmental nonprofits. Visit them at: http://caseytrees.org/get-involved/volunteer/

*Please note that event time and date are tentative due to weather and demand. Time or location may change if AFAC cannot access the orchards. Please check back for more details.*

**Volunteers needed to drive apples back to AFAC headquarters in Arlington. An SUV or minivan is needed. Please email Laura if you can drive.**

Join your fellow Cornell alumni as we harvest fruit to help the hungry! Spend a fine autumn morning volunteering for the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC), a community-based non-profit that provides nutritious supplemental food assistance to Arlingtonians in need. We will be out in the orchards in Winchester, VA, picking apples, a.k.a. “gleaning,” for 2 to 3 hours.

Recommended gear: reusable tote bag, gardening gloves, drinking water, and spending money for the market stand (maybe take home a pie or two!). Layered clothing and sneakers or other closed-toed shoes are recommended. Children aged 5 and up are welcome, and carpooling and/or metro pickups will be arranged as needed.

Location: Marker Miller Farms, Winchester, VA.

Please note that this location is NOT metro accessible. The farms are approximately at 90 minute drive, so we will organize car pools for those who do not have transportation.

Questions: Contact Laura Gonzales Meyers '04 at Lmg38@cornell.edu. Day-of leader: TBD

Please note that this event is weather-dependent!
