Run or Walk on the National Mall followed by refreshment / lunch available at Columbia Island Marina

Cornell Club of Washington gathers runners and walkers of all ages for exercise and meeting new friends. Some of our group are training for the Marine Corps Marathon. And some merely enjoy the walk and talk, making new friends and networking. Babies in strollers, puppies on a leash are all part of the vibe.

A 5-K on the National Mall starting at 7th and Independence, SW as well as lunch together at Columbia Island Marina are only part of the options planned for folks on this Saturday. Select any hours of the fun to plug into and you'll see where to meet. Bring the dog, a date, your daughter for a father-daughter run..... The day begins with stretching and introductions at the large spinny metal sculpture next to the Air and Space Museum (across 7th St. SW from the Hirshhorn Museum.) A lot of us will be wearing Cornell RED.

See the schedule, map with trails of various distances, all the logistics, ,and how to check for same day cancellations due to weather issues at our group's web page:

    https://sites.google.com/view/ccw-event-details/running-walking-group

Bring: plenty of water, sunscreen and money for refreshments. And MORE COWBELL!

Closest Metro to our start is L'Enfant Plaza. Parking at the Columbia Island Marina and Island Time Bar and Grill is abundant and free.

Your registration helps us make introductions and ensure good communication. Open and free to Cornellians to register themselves and their guests.

    Young Alumni are very involved

Directions: Ball's Bluff Park, Leesburg, VA.   Use your GPS to target "Balls Bluff Trailhead Parking" to find the meeting spot.

Trail map to download:  Orange trail on

    https://www.novaparks.com/sites/default/files/maps/trailmapballsbluff.pdf

Gather at 10am at the Balls Bluff Trailhead Parking. You will find it by taking a turn east from Balls Bluff Road through the park entrance and advancing about 200 meters (not the small area right by the entrance, but a more significant parking lot.) There are spaces for about 20 cars and maps posted for hikers to orient themselves and that's where you'll find the Cornell group meeting up, many wearing red. Hike the 2-mile-ish ORANGE trail. It's moderately hilly and mostly wooded with Civil War heritage sites. Downloading the map to your phone helps because there are several trails.

After hiking, take your assigned snacks to the beautiful Casanel Vineyards and Winery, about a 20 minute drive away at 17952 & 17956 Canby Road Leesburg, VA 20175. We'll all be bringing snacks to share. Pay your own tab for the wine you order. They have a menu if you want to purchase to share.  Look for our outdoor table under the big red umbrellas.)

Don't wish to hike? See you at the winery, anyway!

Rain and threatening weather cancels, but very light drizzle will not.

Free for Cornell Club members. $20 non-refundable registration for others.

Registrants should send to Librarian  MS@gmail.com   (no spaces) your cell phone number (to text if there are complications.)  If you cancel, email her to let her know.

We depart onto the trail promptly at 10:15.  If you're late, no worries. Enjoy your hike of any trail when you get there, and just join us at the winery.

Bringwaterbottle, sunscreen, hat, hiking shoes, cash to tip wait staff, cash to pay Maggie if we are forced to put this on her credit card and a snack to share according to list below:

    • women: a wedge of good cheese or washed grapes / fruit
    • men: a box of crackers for cheese or washed/prepped fruit or veggies
    • people who forget this part: $$ to purchase a snack off the menu to share
    • hosts: platters, knives, bowls, napkins, paper plates

Logistics for this event are being kept up to date here: https://sites.google.com/view/ccw-event-details/logistics, so check it before you head out that day. On that page will be posted a weather update, for example, if we need to cancel due to weather conditions.

Glenstone, a museum of modern and contemporary art, is integrated into nearly 300 acres of gently rolling pasture and unspoiled woodland in Montgomery County, Maryland, less than 15 miles from the heart of Washington, DC. Established by the not-for-profit Glenstone Foundation, the museum opened in 2006 and provides a contemplative, intimate setting for experiencing iconic works of art and architecture within a natural environment. The museum includes its original building, the Gallery, as well as additional structures opened in its 2018 expansion: the Arrival Hall (LEED platinum), the Pavilions, and the Café (both LEED gold).

"We envision Glenstone not only as a place, but a state of mind created by the energy of architecture, the power of art, and the restorative qualities of nature. At the core of the museum is a collection of post-World War II art, a very personal project driven by the pursuit of iconic works that have changed the way we think about the art of our time.

The name “Glenstone” derives from two local sources: Glen Road, where the property line begins, and a type of carderock stone indigenous to the area, which is still extracted from several nearby quarries. We hope that Glenstone will always be a destination for all who seek meaningful encounters with art, architecture, and nature—for many years to come."

    —Emily & Mitch Rales

Tickets: CCW has arranged for a timed entry of 25 tickets at 10am, so you must be present then.  After a chance to explore in small groups, we will gather in the cafe for lunch starting around 11:30 AM for an opportunity to connect with the group.(You may leave at any time before it closes at 5pm.) Admission is free, and limited to CCW Members. May add one Guest (12 years of age or older).

Dining: The indoor Café and outdoor Patio offer service from 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Both operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Outside food or beverages, coolers, and picnicking are not permitted at Glenstone. The Café, Patio, and Bookstore accept debit and credit cards as forms of payment. Cash is not accepted.

The Experience: Visits to Glenstone generally consist of a visit through the current exhibitions at the Gallery and the Pavilions and a walk through the landscape. Visits are self-guided and are conducted with dialogue and inquiry rather than lecture.
Visitors should be prepared to spend considerable time on foot, and comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Some visitors may find the walk strenuous, especially the trails, so we ask you to prepare accordingly and contact us in advance to address potential concerns. For further information, please visit our website under Plan Your Visit. If you have any questions or need assistance during your visit, please ask any Glenstone associate wearing a silver bar pin. We are happy to assist.

    Museum Guidelines:

    • Due to the fragile nature of the works on view, all visitors must be 12 years of age or older, and all visitors ages 12-17 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
    • Please do not touch the art. Even outdoor sculptures that are exposed to the elements can be damaged by human contact.
    • Pets are not permitted at Glenstone. Service animals as defined by the ADA are welcome.
    • Glenstone is an all-weather site. If the heat index value exceeds 109 degrees or if the wind chill temperature falls below 0 degrees, some trails will be closed for safety. If there are thunderstorms reported in the area, we will close the grounds until the storm has passed.
    • Photography is not permitted inside the exhibition spaces. You are welcome to take photos outside, but please do not use auxiliary lighting equipment, tripods, selfie sticks, or drones. Commercial photography is not permitted, and all photos must be for personal use only.
    • Trails close at 5 p.m. or sunset, whichever occurs first.
    • Glenstone is a smoke-free environment. The use of tobacco products and e-cigarettes/vaping are not permitted.

    Accessibility:

    • Accessible parking is available directly in front of the Arrival Hall in the Sycamore parking grove.
    • Complimentary wheelchairs and gallery chairs are available upon request. Please speak with any Glenstone associate to request either of these during your visit.
    • Our paths are designed to be firm and stable with accessible grades. Trails cut through wooded areas cover varying terrain and are intended to be experienced on foot. We recommend visitors wear comfortable and durable footwear.
    • There is a quarter-mile walk through the meadow between the parking groves and the indoor art spaces. We offer complimentary cart service on a continuous loop to bypass the meadow walk. The cart brings visitors to the Gallery area, about a 2-minute walk to the Gallery and about a 4-minute walk to the Pavilions. The carts will have a barrier between the driver and visitors and will be cleaned in between uses.
    • Service animals as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act are welcome.

    • The Admiral, 1 Dupont Circle, NW. Washington DC

The Cornell Club of Washington invites all fellow alumni in Washington DC, Northern Virginia, and Maryland to celebrate the legacy and tradition of Theodore Zinck's

Multiple Zinck's in the Washington DC area.

This years Zinck's in Washington DC will be at The Admiral, 1 Dupont Circle (main entrance on New Hampshire Ave,, south side of the Circle)

Come join us in DC - Walk-ins welcome!

A second Zinck's is set in Reston.

Another other Zinck's in the Washington DC area may be posted soon.

Theodore Zinck was a saloonkeeper in Ithaca and his pub, the Hotel Brunswick, was a popular gathering place for Cornellians in the 1890s. After his death in 1903, several bars using his name continued to provide a haven for students. When the last “Zinck’s” closed in the mid-60s, celebrating the spirit of Zinck’s became a favorite Thursday night Collegetown tradition of undergraduates. It wasn't long afterwards that Cornellians continued the tradition in their hometowns.
